No fewer than three of Mehmas' progeny feature within the top 25 2yos on the 2024 European Classifications, which were unveiled at the Longines World Racing Awards on Tuesday.
Scorthy Champ, who signed off his year for Joseph O'Brien with a victory over Henri Matisse in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh, was handed a rating of 117. The colt was bred by Healthy Wood Co Ltd out of Fidaaha, making him a brother to the high-class pair Malavath and Knight.
Vertical Blue (pictured), who nosed out Zarigana to win the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac for Francis-Henri Graffard at Longchamp, is rated 114, behind only Lake Victoria and Desert Flower among the fillies. The filly, bred by Haras du Mont dit Mont, subsequently sold for 3,200,000gns to John Stewart's Resolute Bloodstock at the Tattersalls December Sale.
The Ger Lyons-trained Magnum Force also gained due recognition for his win in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar with a rating of 112. The colt races for Sheikh Abdulla al Khalifa, who bred him out of the Fastnet Rock mare Tropical Treat.
Kodiac also wasn't far away from the action thanks to his daughter, the fourth highest-rated filly Babouche. The Juddmonte homebred, another trained by Ger Lyons, was the brilliant winner of the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes to place her on a mark of 113.
The Tally-Ho bred Seagulls Eleven, third for Hugo Palmer behind Scorthy Champ in the National Stakes, is also rated 113. The son of Galileo Gold was bred by us out of the Kodiac mare Thrilled, also dam of the top sprinter The Platinum Queen.
