Mehmas’ sensational run continues unabated. Fresh from supplying the G1 National Stakes winner Scorthy Champ in addition to the G2 Flying Childers Stakes scorer Aesterius, he was back in the headlines again on Thursday, this time as the sire of the first two home in the G3 Tattersalls Stakes - The Waco Kid and Diego Ventura.
The duo ensured a one-two for Tally-Ho graduates; The Waco Kid was bred by us and sold to SackvilleDonald/Manor House Stables at last year’s Tattersalls October Sale while Diego Ventura was part of our breeze-up arm when sold at the Tattersalls Ireland Breeze-Up to Kevin Ross and Gavin Cromwell.
The Waco Kid was always in a prominent position under Oisin Murphy and having bagged the
near rail, quickened clear of his rivals for an easy score. Diego Ventura, making his third start following a pair of novice wins, stayed on well on the outer to take second for Wathnan Racing.
“I think he’s very typical of the stallion, who seems to be taking the mantle of Kodiac,” said winning trainer Hugo Palmer. “You would always think, if someone sent you a Kodiac, there was a ready-made winner for next year. I feel the same about Mehmas, they are just so tough and go on every ground. This has to be a career best and I think what is lovely about this horse is he has produced career best after career best on every start.”
In addition to Scorthy Champ, Aesterius and now The Waco Kid, an outstanding two week run for Mehmas also includes Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes winner Star Of Mehmas, G2 Mill Reef Stakes runner-up La Bellota and G2 Flying Childers Stakes third Magnum Force.
The Waco Kid was bred by us out of Catchingsnowflakes, a Galileo half-sister to 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko.
Diego Ventura, meanwhile, is yet another high-profile horse this season out of a Kodiac mare, following hot on the heels of G2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Powerful Glory, by Cotai Glory.
