Sensational summer for Mehmas continues

Mehmas' sensational summer continues. Fresh off Believing's Group 2 success at the weekend, Europe's leading 2yo sire was in the news again, this time as the sire of Listed Marwell Stakes heroine Miss Lamai.

The filly, who showed a game attitude under Clifford Lee to run down Make Haste and win a shade cosily in the colours of C R Hirst, becomes the second 2yo stakes winner of the year for her sire and 31st overall. So far this year Mehmas is dominating the leading 2yo sire standings, thanks to the earners of over £540,000 in Britain and Ireland - over £200,000 clear of his nearest pursuer No Nay Never - and over £630,000 in Europe, where he is the sire of 27 winners.

Miss Lamai, who had been last seen running fourth in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, was bred by Denis McDonnell out of Tough Spirit, a winning Iffraaj half-sister to Group 3 winner One For Bobby.

"She ran a great race in the Queen Mary and in the Marygate," said Karl Burke. "I've been convinced that she needs a bit of cover, today it worked perfectly - she got cover and finished out her race really well. She won first time out on soft, so she's pretty versatile.

"That was job done - it's so important with these fillies to get black-type. We can relax a little bit but she deserves a crack at a Group race somewhere along the line and there's a few across Europe over the next few months and I'm sure you'll see her in one of those."

Her win continued a great day at Naas for Mehmas that had begun with the impressive debut score of Diego Ventura in the opening maiden. The colt was part of our breeze-up draft at the Tattersalls Ireland Sale in May and is trained by Gavin Cromwell.
